Hannover. Following its successful premiere this year, the micromobility expo for lightweight vehicles, mobility infrastructure and mobility services is now gearing up for its second season. Preparations are in full swing for a 2020 showcase (from 14 to 16 May) that will explore and illuminate key mobility trends and developments even more impressively than before, with a new array of focus themes, enhanced opportunities for dialogue and exchange, and more space for presenting and test-driving micro-vehicles. "Given the current debate on the future of mobility amongst political leaders and throughout society, the time is right for a show that brings industry, government and users together with a view to fostering micromobility," commented Simona Erdmann, the director at Deutsche Messe in charge of the micromobility expo. The first two days of the 2020 show are reserved for industry professionals, while the final day (Sunday, 16 May) will feature an extensive and action-packed program offering plenty of interest for consumers and professionals alike.
A highly dynamic market
Visitors to the 2020 micromobility expo will be able to experience the latest trends in lightweight and micro-vehicles first-hand. The showcases will feature e-skateboards, e-bikes and pedelecs, cargo bikes and e-cargo bikes, e-scooters, and lightweight vehicles for personal and commercial use. There will also be innovative solutions for charging and transport infrastructure, intermodal mobility concepts and sharing systems on display. In addition, the open-air site will have an expanded lineup of test tracks so visitors will have even more chances to take micro-vehicles for a spin and really get a feel for what they are like to drive or ride.
New challenges for road safety
In June of 2019, the operating of e-scooters on public bike paths became legal in Germany. Since that time, various scooter hire companies have entered the market in grand style, sparking intense public debate on the impact of e-scooters on urban transport and their compatibility with the interests of other road users. Raimund Nowak, CEO of Metropolregion Hannover, believes the criticism leveled at e-scooters is overblown and calls for a more objective, empirical approach to the debate.
"The various views and assessments of e-scooters are quite polarized," he said. "The micromobility expo is therefore a good opportunity to review the first year of intensive e-scooter use on our roads. We should not be too hasty to pass judgment on e-scooters because the fact of the matter is that small vehicles cause small problems in our cities, whilst big vehicles cause big problems."
Micromobility-related challenges for road transport infrastructure will be discussed in depth at a three-day forum at the micromobility expo. The forum's international experts will explore a range of topics, including "Sustainability", "Business Solutions/Last Mile", and "Regulatory Framework for New Mobility Concepts".
"Given the world's rapidly growing population, it is vital to take an integrated approach to sustainability, social justice and economic efficiency. In that sense, the micromobility expo is very much the show for reinventing mobility for the 21st century," commented Dr. Stefan Rammler, Scientific Director at the Institute for Future Studies and Technology Assessment (IZT), Berlin. The forum at the 2020 micromobility expo is an opportunity for attendees and experts from government and industry to discuss the new societal and economic challenges posed by transport and mobility.
